The Connecticut Horticultural Society presents the Glorious Gardens of Washington DC - Wednesday to Saturday, April 25 - 28, 2018!
- Dumbarton Oaks
- Hillwood Gardens
- Tudor Place
- American Horticultural Society - River Farm
Day 1:Join CHS for a delightful spring trip to our remarkable Nation’s Capital. We’ll enjoy appropriate stretch and food breaks as we travel South.
In DC, we will spend 3 nights at the lovely Key Bridge Marriott Hotel. Relax and settle in before our WELCOME DINNER at the local favorite, Tony & Joe’s. After dinner, enjoy a wonderful ’Washington by Night’ Riding Tour.
Day 2:On 5½ acres overlooking the Potomac River, TUDOR PLACE remains one of America’s last intact urban estates from the Federal Period. Built in 1805 by Martha Washington’s granddaughter, Martha Custis Peter and remained in the hands of the Peter Family for over 180 years.
The dramatic collection of furniture, silver, jewelry, art, sculpture & portraits, offer a rare insight into the cultural and social city of Georgetown and the Capital.
The Federal period gardens retain their distinct Southern charm with an original boxwood from Mount Vernon. The open lawns and garden rooms are a delight and a useful historical record of land use over time.
The other amazing garden in Georgetown is DUMBARTON OAKS. Here, Beatrix Farrand found her greatest patron in Mildred Bliss. Over the next10 years, the duo converted a steep hillside into a series of gardens with eternal beauty. The Ellipse with its rare Linden Trees, English Walled Garden, Pebbled Garden, Arbor Terrace and Orangerie, are considered some of Farrand’s finest creations…
Day 3:Today we are in for a treat! We are going to RIVER FARM, home of the AMERICAN HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY. We will be able to explore this exceptional facility at our own pace. From here, we will head to OLD TOWN ALEXANDRIA for lunch and shopping on own.
Return to the hotel to freshen up before we head off to our FAREWELL DINNER and MUSIC CRUISE along the Potomac River aboard the Odyssey. Enjoy the pace and beauty of the river and its unique views of Washington and its majestic monuments, landmarks, Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and more.
Day 4: We’re invited to spend the morning at HILLWOOD, the magnificent estate of Marjorie Merriweather Post. Twelve acres of formal gardens, each designed to flow from the house. Each April, over 4000 azaleas bloom in profusion along with rhodys, spirea, lilacs, viburnum, redbuds, magnolias, tulips, daffodils - Mrs Post’s collection reveals her fondness for the newest and most unusual varieites. Cutting gardens and greenhouses produce an abundance of flowers that embellish every room of the mansion - we tour both the home & garden. We will enjoy a wonderful buffet lunch at Hillwood before departing for home.
Hillwood is a fabulous place to visit in every way!!!
We are homeward bound with grand memories of our visit to Washington DC.
