I've been a 10 plus year group leader with Friendship Tours & The Ship Shop and wouldn't hesitate to recommend them for day trips, overnights and cruises. We can always be sure that if the "Friendship Family" is involved it will be a organized, safe and enjoyable trip.

The Connecticut Horticultural Society presents Summer in the Gardens, West Chester, PA - Wednesday to Friday, August 22 - 24, 2018!
  • Longwood Gardens
  • PHS Meadowbrook Farm
  • Mt. Cuba
  • Private Garden - Mountsier Garden

DAY 1: We begin our journey with a tour of Pennsylvania Horticulture Society’s Meadowbrook Farm. Originally the home of J. Liddon Pennock and Alice Herkness Pennock, it is a 25 acre property where visitors can come to enjoy formal & informal gardens, seasonal plantings, and an extremely diverse plant palette. The Pennocks were known to say, “We didn’t want to have an estate, we wanted a place that our friends could enjoy”. The gardens were bequeathed to the PHS in 2004. We will spend two nights at the Hotel Warner in West Chester, PA. Once a grand movie house, built in 1930, this boutique hotel is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Welcome dinner tonight at a local favorite, Teca, featuring Italian fare.

DAY 2: An entire day will be devoted to Longwood Gardens, including an evening return to see the breathtaking Illuminated Fountain Performance! We start this day with a Guided History Tour ‘The Longwood Story’. Then we will be met by Dr. Peter Zale, Breeder & Curator of Plants and past CHS speaker for a short Q & A. Free time to enjoy the gardens on your own & lunch with your Longwood Dining Dollars. We return to Longwood this evening to witness the spectacular Illuminated Fountain Performance.

DAY 3: This morning will be spent at Mt Cuba Center where beauty and purpose intersect. The Center was founded on an understanding of the importance of native plants, natural lands and conservation. The Mt Cuba mission is to inspire an appreciation for the beauty and value of native plants and a commitment to support the habitats that sustain them. We will enjoy a buffet lunch before heading on to our last stop, Private Garden - Mountsier Garden. For the last twenty-three years Richard Hartlage has worked with Silas Mountsier & Graeme Hardie on their garden in Nutley, New Jersey. The garden has deep personal meaning for the three and represents the history of a friendship built in physical space. For visitors, the emotional content is palpable with every detail and vista. Though a strolling garden at its heart, the garden offers many places to sit and rest to view the vast collection of figurative and modern art. Graeme has invited us to enjoy our CHS Traditional Wine & Cheese Party in their garden! Continue home with fabulous memories of these amazing gardens.
