The Connecticut Horticultural Society presents the Gardens of the Hudson Valley - Sunday and Monday, August 13 - 14, 2017! It promises to be a memorable tour featuring:
- Beatrix Farrand Gardens
- Vanderbilt Gardens
- Stonecrop Gardens
- Innisfree Gardens
Day 1: We begin our two day journey towards the Hudson Valley. We make our way to the Beatrix Farrand Garden at Bellefield in Hyde Park, NY.
Our first stop is the earliest existing private garden created by one of America’s most celebrated landscape designers. Beatrix Farrands work defined the American taste in gardens throughout the first half of the 20th century. She helped introduce the use of perennial plants in combinations based upon color harmony, bloom sequence and texture. This was the birth of the mixed border that is standard in gardens today.
Enjoy our docent led tour of this spectacularly restored garden!
After our visit here, we will head to lunch on own at the Eveready Diner.
Off to the fabulous F W Vanderbilt Gardens. Built by a grandson of the infamous Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt, the estate is a beautiful example of the lifestyle of the rich and famous during the early part of the 20th century, America's 'Gilded Age'. Its location on the banks of New York's beautiful Hudson River Valley also affords magnificent views of one of the most important places in American history.
A large, formal garden was common to most estates of the period. Frederick Vanderbilt, who was an avid gardener himself, established an Italian-style, terrace garden containing many varieties of roses, annuals and perennials. After his death in 1938, the estate was sold to the federal government thanks to the intervention of President Franklin Roosevelt. Our docent led tour will show us the grandeur that this garden has been restored to.
Our overnight accommodations and dinner will be at The Beekman Arms/Delamater Inn, the oldest Inn in America. Enjoy this wonderful historic compound with it’s oak beams, broad plank floors etc...every room is different!
Dinner in the Tavern tonight will be: Field green salad and a choice of Grilled Free Range Chicken with a charred rosemary pesto, Braised Boneless Beef Short Ribs OR Baked Crabmeat Stuffed Shrimp. Dessert will be a local Mead Orchard Apple Crisp!
Day 2: We start our day with continental breakfast before heading to Innisfree Garden. Recognized as one of the “world’s ten best gardens,”. Innisfree Garden is a powerful icon of mid-twentieth century design. Innisfree merges the essence of Modernist ideas with traditional Chinese and Japanese garden design principles in a form that evolved through subtle handling of the landscape and slow manipulation of its ecology. The result is a sublime composition of rock, water, wood, and sky achieved with remarkable economy and grace.
Enjoy a private, guided tour of this distinctive American stroll garden.
We will stop in the Village of Millbrook for time on own for lunch.
Our final stop on this fabulous garden trip will be Stonecrop Gardens in lovely Cold Spring, NY, the 12 acre original estate of Frank and Anne Cabot, gifted garden creators, and the founders of the Garden Conservancy. Garden Features: Pond Gardens with Aquatic Display alpine stone beds, cliff rock gardens, perennial beds, English style flower garden and a beautiful conservatory. Our docent led tour will show us the highlights.
We depart for home with new ideas for our own gardens!
