Gettysburg offers a small town holiday experience filled with traditions that bring out the best of the season.
Depart aboard our deluxe motorcoach for Gettysburg, PA. The magic of this small town shines especially bright during the holiday season and twinkles with holiday cheer. We begin with a visit to the Gettysburg Heritage Center for 1863 CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS. Christmas has long been a time when families come together and celebrate the season and their love for one another. Many of the holiday traditions we currently embrace had their origins in the Victorian era. Learn the impact of the Civil War on the home front as well as on the soldiers in the field. 2 nights accommodations at the brand new BEST WESTERN GETTYSBURG adjacent to the historic battlefields. Welcome dinner tonight at the CARRIAGE HOUSE INN where we will be joined by GENERAL & MRS LEE.
Enjoy a leisurely morning today at the GETTYSBURG CHRISTMAS FESTIVAL offering a small town holiday experience from beautiful décor that lines the streets to the picturesque storefronts and decorated homes. The entire town comes together to spread holiday cheer offering carriage rides, caroling, visits with Santa and holiday crafts. This afternoon we’ll celebrate Christmas at the EISENHOWER NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE. See the family’s home decorated as it was during their presidential years in the 1950’s. Walk through the historic halls adorned with poinsettias and boughs of holly, take a peek at the large fir tree surrounded with presents, awe at the dining room set for a traditional holiday meal in the 1950’s and hear the stories about the Eisenhower’s Christmas traditions. Early dinner at the HICKORY BRIDGE FARM before our CANDLELIGHT CHRISTMAS TOUR OF THE SHRIVER HOUSE. Take a step back in time and enter the 19th century home of the Shriver family, one of the wealthiest families in town, and see how the family prepared for the upcoming Christmas holidays and learn the stories of their five Christmases in their home.
A visit to Gettysburg would not be complete without a RIDING TOUR OF THE BATTLEFIELD with our local guide. Learn about the largest battle ever fought on the continent, see where Lincoln delivered his Gettysburg Address. Visit the MUSEUM AND VISITORS CENTER at the Gettysburg National Military Park to view the inspiring film “A New Birth of Freedom” and the 1884 Cyclorama, a mammoth painting-in-the-round. We head for home this afternoon with warm holiday memories of our time in Gettysburg.
